According to the Carmina Gadelica, daily life in the Scottish Highlands and Islands was surrounded by short rituals and prayers. There were prayers and runes for healing, justice, journeys, holy days, the sun and moon, spinning, carding and weaving, saining (protective charms or rites), churning, baking and other laborious tasks that were carried out throughout the day. There were prayers to start the day and prayers to finish.
